Bevan Fellow

Tegid works as a Service Improvement Manager with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

Much of his career has been spent working in the heritage and information services sector for local charity organisations and local government. It was here his improvement journey started in earnest and he has since moved into Improvement roles.

Tegid’s Bevan Fellow project will focus on how Systems Thinking approaches can assist with ‘managing’ the inherent complexity and multifaceted challenges facing the health service and assess how systemic methodologies can be utilised to intervene in complex health systems.

His professional interests include Systems Thinking and Complexity.

“As a Service Improvement Manger with BCUHB, I’m passionate about, and aspire to make, a meaningful impact in driving innovation and improvement of our healthcare system. I hope that this fellowship will empower me to develop innovative solutions, inform evidence-based practices, and advocate transformation and improvement of our complex healthcare system through the application of Systems Thinking.

I also hope that the Bevan Fellowship will enable me to gain several invaluable experiences and insights, and the opportunity to engage and collaborate with experts, healthcare professionals and like-minded individuals.”

Elin has been a General Practitioner partner at Meddygfa Teilo in Llandeilo for the last eighteen years. Alongside her clinical work, she serves as the Associate Dean for GP Training HDUHB. Notably, Elin played a key role in establishing the All Wales Integrated Care GP fellowship scheme (iGP) and currently directs the program. Her focus lies in improving GP retention in  Wales, reflecting her commitment to accessible healthcare and emphasising the important role of the family doctor in relationship based care. Additionally, she is dedicated to enhancing medical education and training within the General Practice field, aiming to create supportive and innovative learning environments with exciting opportunities to develop enjoyable portfolio careers.

Elin’s Bevan Fellowship aims to develop and grow the iGP scheme to offer a diverse range of exciting posts to GPs that cover areas of clinical and educational need in all parts of Wales.

In seeking the Bevan Fellowship, Elin aims to advance and leverage her skills in healthcare leadership and innovation. The fellowship presents an opportunity for her to delve deeper into strategies for improving GP retention, particularly in rural Wales. As a General Practitioner and PD of GP training and the iGP scheme, Elin envisions the fellowship as a platform to contribute to policy discussions and implement practical solutions. Furthermore, it provides her the means to extend her influence in medical education and training, fostering innovative approaches within the field of General Practice. Overall, the Bevan Fellowship aligns with Elin’s aspirations to make a broader impact on healthcare delivery, education, and workforce sustainability.

Bevan Senior Fellow

Mandy is a Senior Improvement and Collaboration Manager within Q Lab Cymru, a  partnership between Improvement Cymru and Q, with funding from the Health Foundation. Improvement Cymru forms part of Quality, Safety and Improvement function in NHS Wales Performance and Improvement.

Her professional interests are in systems thinking, design thinking , systems convening in social learning , and senior and executive coaching.

Her Bevan Fellowship focuses on exploring the potential of a Human Learning System approach in public service that embraces complexity, human relationships and continuous learning in the Wales context.

Mandy hopes that through her Bevan Fellowship, she will have opportunity of working collaboratively with others in dynamic networked learning environments,  and use multiple-case study research across Wales to explore whether taking a Human Learning Systems approach for place based systems change strengthens the evidence base for this alternative approach to public service in health and care.

Hannah is an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner who is leading the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Service in Swansea Bay University Health Board. Her recent Masters in Health Care Management has unleashed an interest in developing system wide change through value based health care principles.

Hannah sees being a Bevan Fellow as an opportunity to influence transformation change to develop a more robust sustainable service for the future.

Hannah’s Bevan Fellowship focuses on the remodelling of the access to the Musculoskeletal pathway using in Swansea Bay University Health Board using digital systems. She is hoping to improve the quality of care for patient with MSK conditions in the health board.

Bevan Fellow

Clive is a specialist practitioner in mental health nursing who has spent his career working in memory assessment and dementia care in both hospital and community settings. He is a former health technology exemplar with the Bevan Commission in which he evaluated the use of an app to help triage for changes to cognition. This exemplar was developed further under the first Adopt and Spread scheme.

In 2023 he completed a doctorate in nursing science in which he looked at some of the barriers and enablers to adopting more person-centred and integrated pathways to diagnose dementia. He is an advocate of general systems thinking to help explain the gaps in service and he is keen to promote this theory to help other innovators in health and care to understand and overcome resistance to change.

Clive is currently working as a Management Knowledge Transfer Partner (mKTP) with an industry-based partner in Wales. He will be evaluating the use of a wearable technology to enable vulnerable people to continue living safely in their own homes. The evaluation will include stakeholders from several university health boards and local authorities in Wales and has been sponsored by UKRI and Welsh Government.

“The Bevan Fellowship will give me the opportunity to work with change leaders from health and care from across Wales. I am hoping to share my experience as a former health technology exemplar and especially as someone who understands the difficulties of trying to implement change. The fellowship will be a wonderful opportunity to meet other change innovators and to explore the acceptability of new technologies to promote prudent health and care.”

Finalist – Award for New Ways of Working, Advancing Healthcare Awards 2025

Esther is a Speech and Language Therapist currently working in the Community Neurological Rehabilitation Service and the Early Supported Discharge Team for Stroke in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Esther has always had a passion for holistic communication rehabilitation, with a particular enthusiasm for music and its role in Stroke Rehabilitation. This stems from her previous career as a professional viola player.  In 2019, together with Chroma Music Therapist, Vicky Guise, she jointly set up the first inpatient Aphasia-Friendly Choir in Wales. The Aphasia-Friendly Choir and related research has been recognised and presented at conferences both within Wales and across the UK. Esther has also published in the International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders on the inpatient choir (https://doi.org/10.1111/1460-6984.13143).

Esther has also recently completed a RCBC Wales First into Research Fellowship.

As the Speech and Language Therapist for the Community Neurological Rehabilitation Service (CNRS), Esther has recently launched a co-produced collaborative initiative between C&V UHB, Cardiff Metropolitan University’s (CMU) Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) Department and Chroma.

 As part of this novel cross-boundary collaboration, the team runs community-based CNRS/CMU communication groups, including a community-based Aphasia-Friendly Choir with Chroma at CMU. Sharing resources across health and education means patients can access this much-needed community-based service, but with additional benefits to themselves, the NHS CNRS, CMU and Chroma.

Esther hopes that the support offered by the Bevan Fellowship will come at exactly the right time in terms of defined points of evaluation and reflection, showcasing, research and further development of this new and extremely valuable service.

“Specifically, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the development of current ideas to make the groups themselves sustainable, ultimately enabling individuals within C&V UHB with long-term neurological conditions to feel empowered to live meaningful and fulfilling lives.”

As a Bevan Fellow, Esther hopes to be immersed in an environment that supports her to bring about change for the patients, her colleagues and the service.

Bevan Fellow

Sian is a senior public health professional with over 30 years experience working in different sectors of the NHS with a passion for primary care. Sian has held numerous positions to influence the public’s health, NHS settings, medicines management, workforce development and healthcare professional agendas. She has led small local teams, local and national projects and programmes and provided senior leadership to national pieces of work.

Sian has held a position of a Consultant in Public Health for the last ten years. She is currently working in the Primary Care Division in Public Health Wales leading and delivering a mixed portfolio which includes amongst other topic areas, climate change in primary care.  Sian started her professional career as a community pharmacist and continues to be registered as pharmacist.

Sian’s Bevan Fellowship will focus on the impact of primary care in tackling climate change and therefore improving the health outcomes of the people in Wales. This will be through engaging with the Greener Primary Care Wales Framework and Awards Scheme and other Primary Care Division led green initiatives.

Sian is hoping to achieve the following from being a Bevan Fellow:

1. Some time and space with independent advice and guidance to think about:

• the work we have done to date and escalate this to address local and national health issues through a climate change lens.
• how we can spread and scale and publicise / publish the impact of the work.
• strengthen links and build collaboration with other national pieces of work

2.Explore working with academia to drive the change and support the research agenda to demonstrate the impact of primary care in tackling climate change to improve the health outcomes of the people in Wales.

3. Challenge her thinking and enable her to challenge others with regard to this agenda.

4. Provide an opportunity to build on her network of health and care professionals.

“I would like to explore how to change the narrative so that climate change is not seen as a standalone issue and an extra effort but integral to good clinical care and prevention, less consumption and waste and cost efficiencies. This may encourage more engagement and fits with the Bevan Prudent Healthcare Principles.”

Bevan Senior Fellow

Ross is a Paramedic and Director of Commissioning for Ambulance Service and 111 for the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee.

He has worked in a number of organisations in the NHS and Welsh Government.

His project is focused on understanding the drivers of ambulance 999 demand and developing a commissioning approach for ambulance services through the lens of social determinants of health.

He hopes to draw on the experience, advice and mentorship of the people and networks of the Bevan Commission to enhance this work, and to use it as a springboard for sharing the outputs of this work across the UK and internationally.

Mr. Preetham Kodumuri graduated from Guntur, South India in 2006. He undertook basic surgical training in the East Midlands and successfully completed orthopaedic training (CCT) in Nottingham and Derby in 2018. He further trained as a nationally appointed hand surgery fellow (ATP fellowship) in Manchester and Birmingham. In 2019, he accomplished the rare achievement of being awarded the British and European Hand Surgery Diplomas. He was selected to travel overseas to international renowned hand units such as the Mayo Clinic and the Christine Kleinert Hand Institute in the USA and the Ganga Hospitals in India. Preetham has been working as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Wrexham Maelor Hospital since April 2020. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family (two young children), running, playing sports and has a wide range of culinary interests.

Preetham’s Bevan Fellowship project focuses on exploring and promoting sustainable alternatives to plastic useable in healthcare.

“I aspire to elevate the success attained in hand surgery through Bevan Exemplar programme by extending sustainable principles to various surgical specialties. My goal is to expand eco-friendly practices within orthopaedic implants through proactive collaboration with industry leaders, steering the manufacturing arm towards greater sustainability.

A key aspect of my initiative involves reducing the environmental impact of healthcare by systematically replacing single-use items with reusable alternatives. The aim is to create a ripple effect, inspiring similar shifts in other healthcare domains and fostering environmental consciousness within the medical community.

I am dedicated to exploring innovative solutions for sustainable packaging, researching and adopting alternatives to virgin plastic to decrease the carbon footprint associated with medical supplies. Through these changes, I aim to establish a model of comprehensive sustainability in healthcare, demonstrating the transformative potential of environmentally conscious practices across diverse medical specialties.”
