Nick Howell, National AHP lead for Neurological Conditions Network NHSWP&I (secondment), Network Support Manager MSK Conditions Network – NHS Wales performance and Improvement NHSWP&I

Nick is a physiotherapist who has specialised in neurological conditions for 15 years. Nick has spent most of his professional career working in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board working in different neurological specialities before becoming the team lead for the acute neuroscience centre at UHW. From here Nick moved into a strategic role within the MSK conditions network and shortly after was seconded into the Neurological Conditions Network as the National AHP Lead.

Nick has always been interested in improvement and through his career has sought out opportunities to support the development of individuals and services to better serve the population.

Nick is now engaged in strategic improvement across Wales in both his roles within NHSWP&I. Nick is passionate in raising the profile and impact of neurorehabilitation in Wales using data and patient voice whilst developing national optimal pathways collaboratively to maximise a persons chance at recovering following a neurological injury.

Currently Nick is leading the optimisation of neurorehabilitation pathways in Wales. Specifically, Nick is developing a proposal for a complex rehabilitation service which could support the needs of complex patients who currently do not have their needs met as inpatients in Wales. This proposal could be expanded beyond neurological conditions and puts an empathise on supporting a person to move through the system and into the community in a timely way whilst support the person and the services around them to manage the complexity presented. This would directly support the Primary Care Model for Wales and the delivery of a Healthier Wales whilst supporting better rehabilitation for individuals.
