Nygaire is the great niece of Aneurin Bevan, the creator of the NHS, and was named after him. She was born and bred in Tredegar and spent her childhood and adolescent years living there. On leaving school she qualified as a nurse and her career led her to working with people with learning disabilities in Monmouthshire County Council when the major national policy- The All Wales Strategy for People with Learning disability, was implemented. She was able to contribute to the closure of hospitals for people with learning disability and develop new provisions of services within local areas. This was a very exciting time and many individuals were supported to lead independent lives, develop their skills, and be part of their communities.
Nygaire then moved to Somerset where she worked with all client groups including older people, children with disabilities and troubled young people. During this time she developed a number of new services to support older people. She was also a member of the newly created PCT’s (Primary Care Trusts) in England.
During this time Nygaire undertook her social work qualification, her psychology degree and a Master degree. She is interested in undertaking her doctorate in the future and her research will focus on the challenges facing the NHS today and tomorrow.
In 2004 she returned to Wales to work as Assistant Director for Powys County Council and during her 8 years there she spent one year working with Powys Local Health Board as a Locality Manager. Her work focused primarily on old people’s services and her priorities were improving the range of services available to people in this very rural county, improving quality, working in partnership and ensuring that users and carers were at the heart of service provision and delivery.
Nygaire currently works as a fee paid Inspector for Healthcare Inspectorate Wales and is a Co Opted Member with a lead for Safeguarding, for Pobl Housing Association and a Bevan Commissioner.
