Professor Donald M. Berwick KBE MD is President Emeritus and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, USA. He is a former adviser to Barack Obama and administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (the federal agency overseeing Medicare and Medicaid). He has served on the faculties of the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health.

In 2013 he carried out a review of patient safety in the NHS on behalf of Prime Minister David Cameron. Recognized as a leading authority on health care quality and improvement, Dr. Berwick has received numerous awards for his contributions. In 2005, he was appointed “Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire” by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his work with the British National Health Service. Dr. Berwick is the author or co-author of over 200 scientific articles and six books. He currently serves as Lecturer in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School. In 2022 he entered the Modern Healthcare Hall of Fame.
