Bevan Fellow

Stuart is a GP Partner at Llansamlet Surgery, Swansea. He is passionate about General Practice and how the role is pivotal in placing the family doctor back at the heart of the NHS, where continuity of care, patient-centred practice, and community health are prioritised. Through this, we can improve health outcomes and build better relationships between primary and secondary care by addressing issues early and managing chronic conditions effectively. Reinvigorating the GP role within the NHS underscores the value of personalised care in a system increasingly stretched by demand, ensuring that patients receive the comprehensive and accessible care they deserve.

Stuart is dedicated to medical education and GP training in Wales and feels it is essential for cultivating a skilled and compassionate workforce that helps serve our diverse communities. As a GP in Wales, he sees contributing to training the next generation of doctors as both a privilege and a responsibility, fostering a supportive learning environment that combines academic excellence with real-world experience. Through mentorship, teaching, and collaboration with institutions such as Swansea University, he is dedicated in helping to shape a sustainable healthcare system in Wales, ensuring that medical students and GP Registrars are equipped to meet the unique challenges of primary care with confidence and competence.

“As a GP with a special interest in mental health, I am deeply passionate about improving access to services for patients with ADHD. I recognise the significant barriers many face in seeking timely assessment and support, which can lead to unnecessary distress and challenges in daily life. My goal is to advocate for streamlined referral pathways and better integration between primary care and specialist services to ensure that both adults and children receive the evaluations and interventions they need without undue delay. By working closely with local healthcare providers and community stakeholders, I am committed to creating a more accessible and efficient system that empowers patients and families to navigate their ADHD journey with greater confidence and support.

As a Bevan Fellow, I aim to drive meaningful change in how we approach mental health and neurodiversity within primary care, particularly for patients who suspect they have ADHD. By leveraging the fellowship’s platform, I hope to enhance access to timely assessments, refine referral processes, and bridge the gaps between primary and specialist services, ensuring a more seamless and supportive journey for patients of all ages. This opportunity will also allow me to deepen my understanding of healthcare systems, policy development, and leadership in innovation, enabling me to advocate for sustainable improvements both locally and nationally. Furthermore, I see the fellowship as a pathway to my own professional growth, where I can refine my skills in research, collaboration, and system-wide thinking, ultimately enriching my practice as a GP and advancing my contributions to medical education and mental health care in Wales.”
